The Great Plains of North America are connected by similar climactic and vegetative conditions, yet cover a large geographic section of western North America, spanning National, Tribal, and State jurisdictions. Although streams of the Great Plains support diverse fish assemblages relative to those in the Rocky Mountains, the region remains an understudied and in some cases, undescribed aquatic resource. Are the factors that regulate the ecology of these streams similar across this large region? Are issues of conservation similar? Our symposium will bring together a group of experts from the United States and Canada to present current research findings on the ecology of Great Plains streams. Our symposium will enable AFS members and other symposium participants to assess the current state of knowledge in these systems and gain insight into ecological similarities and differences across this multijurisdictional landscape. Because our speakers come from a large geographic scale, ranging from Texas to Canada, our symposium participants and audience members can make important professional and conceptual connections that will in turn accrue benefits to their own localized research programs and issues.
