Water Quality Scientist
Salary Range: $54,080 - $78,416

THE OPPORTUNITY
Assist in the protection of the aquatic environment of the South Platte River basin by providing scientific and technical assistance with water quality assessment and biological studies of effluent, streams/rivers, groundwater, and reservoirs.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors degree in aquatic biology or related science with course work in statistics. Five years' experience in conducting field and laboratory studies and surveys. Any equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in microcomputer applications. Good written and verbal communication skills. Desired Qualifications: Masters degree in aquatic biology or related science. General knowledge of wastewater treatment processes and the biological impact on receiving water systems. Basic knowledge of aquatic systems and processes. Experience in fisheries, limnology and/or benthic sciences. Experience in Database management and Development. Familiarity with GPS and GIS.
TYPICAL DUTIES
• Develops and conducts field surveys and bio-assessments (fish/macroinvertebrate) to determine the effect of the District's discharge on aquatic environments. Evaluates habitat suitability for aquatic life in various systems.
• Supervises the collection of data, performs statistical analysis and prepares reports related to field studies and monitoring of aquatic systems. Interprets the significance of the data and provides recommendations to District staff upon request.
• Establishes procedures for conducting field and laboratory studies in accordance with sound scientific research principles and all applicable safety procedures. Researches and evaluates available water quality monitoring product alternatives and ensures proper acquisition of supplies and equipment in water quality and environmental monitoring and assessment.
• Develops and updates annual management plans, watershed plans, field procedures, and monitoring protocols. Assists with some specific analytical methods and procedures.
• Participates in the development of computer models and performs computer modeling related to stream and lake monitoring activities.
• Responsible for the upload of Metro District’s water quality, habitat, and biological data to various public databases including but not limited to EPA STORET, EPA EDAS, and Barr Lake/Milton Reservoir Watershed Database.
• Responsible for keeping current with the Endangered Species Act and develop management plans, studies and prepare reports showing that the Metro District is in compliance with the act.
• Represents the District on relevant committees, sub-committees, work groups, and associations that relate to biological and water quality monitoring, assessment and criteria development.
• Responsible for various education efforts intended to inform and educate the public, regulatory agencies and other stakeholder groups on the effects the Metro District’s discharge on the environment and to address any concerns.
• Performs a variety of other duties as assigned.
