Fisheries sciences tackle complicated, societal-level problems. Addressing these challenges requires a fisheries science workforce with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and expertises. However, in a recent study, researchers reported a disparity in gender and racial representation and a lack of recruitment and retention of gender and racial minorities in fisheries science across sectors and regions of the United States (Arismendi and Penaluna 2016). A workforce that does not represent the general population will fail to consider and address all the problems faced by the whole society.
- One in four fisheries faculty or scientists is a woman
- One in ten fisheries faculty or scientists is nonwhite
- Progress towards recruiting and retaining minorities has been slow in the last three decades
The state of our fisheries and aquatic resources cannot wait for greater representation to happen passively. Actively identifying and dismantling barriers and changing fisheries science culture is needed to accelerate this process.
The Western Division of the American Fisheries Society (WDAFS) Recruitment and Retention Committee was established in 2017 and is currently composed of 13 members.
